John, who is a seasoned legal practitioner with circa two decades of experience in oil & gas, corporate law and commercial litigation, has appeared in various tiers of courts in Nigeria. He is versed in BIMCO Supplytime Charterparty practice area of international maritime law. BIMCO, which stands for Baltic and International Maritime Council, is a global shipping association that represents ship owners, ship operators, and other stakeholders in the international maritime industry.

Education & Qualifications

John holds an LL.B from the prestigious University of Benin and was admitted to the Nigerian bar in 2007. On completion of national service under the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme in 2008, he practiced for a year in a Warri-based law firm - G.L. Notoma & Associates.Thereafter, he proceeded to Compos Mentis Chambers, where he practiced extensively from 2010-2016, under the tutelage of the late Dafe Akpedeye SAN (OFR), an erstwhile Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Delta State.In 2011, he obtained a certificate in Legal Drafting from the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Lagos. In 2014, he participated in a training program organized by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, (UK) Nigeria Branch.ThisDay Newspaper recognized John on 3rd of September, 2019, as its "Legal Personality of the Week."

Professional Experience

As part of up-skilling, John attends local and international conferences and trainings, one of which is the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) which holds annually in Houston, Texas, USA. Founded in 1969, OTC is the world's premier event where energy professionals gather to share ideas, drive innovation, and advance the technical and scientific knowledge needed to responsibly develop offshore resources.

Notable Highlights & Achievements

• BIMCO Distinction: In London, United Kingdom, April 2023, John was awarded a distinction in a BIMCO masterclass on Supplytime Charterparty. Distinction was the highest grade for assessment. • International Arbitration: In 2022, he put together and coordinated two separate international maritime legal teams for the combined defence and counter-claim of circa $20 million (Twenty Million US Dollars) over two charterparty disputes arising from the installation of subsea flexible pipelines in an offshore/deepwater asset owned by the NNPCL. • LMAA Arbitration: Both disputes were adjudicated by an international arbitral tribunal, under the London Maritime Arbitration Association (LMAA) Rules, with London as the seat of arbitration. • ECOWAS Court: Represented the NNPCL at the ECOWAS Court in defence of a claim instituted by the Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) over allegations of environmental degradation in the Niger-Delta in the course of its crude oil exploration activities. John is a 2-time member of the NBA National Executive Committee (NBA -NEC) (2018-2020 and 2020-2022), during the tenures of Paul Usoro SAN and Olumide Akpata, respectively. He has served in diverse NBA committees at the national level such as the Law Reform Committee (2020-2022) and Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee (2023-2024) etc.From 2018-2020, he served as secretary of the NBA Warri Branch. He currently chairs the Webinar Committee (2024-2026) and Publicity Committee (2024-2026) of the NBA Warri Branch. Also within the branch, he served as secretary of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee (2023-2024).

John is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA), the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He is also a member of two sections of the NBA - the NBA Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) and the NBA Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP).
